The United States Navel Academy offers a very affordable week-long summer camp for students 8th – 11th grade. The Summer STEM Program costs $200 which does not include travel to and from the Naval Academy. Even including air fair this could still be about the same price as a local sleep-away camp. It looks like lots of fun. You can see a wide variety of activities in the STEM Gallery. (I do have to say that the website appeared to have been designed and built on Dreamweaver in 2004, but I’m just going to figure that this is a result of public budget cuts and they put the money into programming rather than into the website. )
Activities include presentations in each of the Naval Academy’s engineering departments, STEM-based projects and activities, and a tour of Washington, D.C.
Rising Grade Level Dates
8th and 9th June 3-8
10th June 10-15
11th June 17-21* (this camp is one-day shorter)
Admission to camp it selective, based on academic achievement, test scores, in-school and out-of-school activities, and geographic home. I would imagine that the number of students applying from the west coast is generally lower than the number of the kids back east so chances might be better if you are from Oregon than from Maryland or Virginia. Applications are due April 15, 2013. Students will be notified May 1.
